All that Breathes by Indian filmmaker Shaunuk Sen is a beautiful and deeply empathetic nature film about two brothers who rescue birds in New Delhi. With great wisdom and humor they show how all life, from fungi to humans, is intertwined.

Twenty years ago the brothers Saud and Nadeem started caring for injured birds of prey, after they found out that the regular animal hospital only takes care of vegetarian birds. They share their home with dozens of kites and owls. Most of them are black kites, who massively populate the city. New Delhi is one of the most overpopulated cities in the world, and perhaps one of the most polluted. In beautifully photographed scenes, animals appear in the most unexpected places.

The brothers talk about how life tries to adapt to changing circumstances. The birds will sing higher to be heard above the city noise, but have also discovered how they can use cigarette butts as a defense against parasites. All That Breathes won the top prize for Best Documentary at two major festivals this year: Sundance and Cannes.
