Van 2 juli t/m 29 augustus host Focus Filmtheater in de foyer op de eerste verdieping Café Disorient – Beverages for Friends, in het kader van de internationale kunstmanifestatie Sonsbeek 20 – 24.

Café Disorient: Beverages for Friends is een performatieve installatie van kunstenaar Susanne Khalil Yusef waar zij een publiek programma samenstelt met gesprekken, performances en muziekoptredens. Dit te midden van haar werk – zitblokken die beschilderd zijn met het duizelingwekkende iconische Keffiyeh patroon, een serie keramieken kannen gemaakt in samenwerking met WONNE, en ramen beplakt met vele gezichten van bekende mensen die zich hebben gemengd in het gesprek over hedendaags kolonialisme in Palestina en Israël. Yusef nodigt je uit voor de volgende bijeenkomst – ze schenkt Arabische koffie en presenteert:

Susanne Khalil Yusef (1984, Duitsland, Palestina)

Susanne maakt meeslepende, kleurrijke installaties, oogverblindende muurschilderingen, canvasschilderijen, getufte vliegende tapijten, gebreide doeken, keramische sculpturen, video’s, assemblages, lichtbakken, performances, bronzen sculpturen, auto’s, publieksparticipatie, politiehonden en zelfgemaakte archieven. Haar installaties bieden vaak ruimte aan personen uit verschillende disciplines, zoals spoken word artiesten, schrijvers en een Arabisch Ensemble. In haar werk stelt ze kritische vragen over thema’s als vaderland en ontheemding, identiteit en sociaal-geografische machtsverhoudingen. De verhalen binnenin zijn nauw verwant aan haar eigen biografie: gewapende conflicten in haar thuisland Palestina, migratiestromen, autonomie, oriëntalisme, ballingschap en koloniale situaties. Haar werk is opgenomen in de collecties van Museum Arnhem en het Textielmuseum in Tilburg, Nederland. Naast haar praktijk als kunstenaar heeft Khalil Yusef ook een groepstentoonstelling georganiseerd over kolonialisme met internationale kunstenaars.

[ENGLISH] From July 2nd untill the last weekend of August, Focus Filmtheater – in close collaboration with Sonsbeek 20 – 24 – hosts CAFÉ DISORIENT: BEVERAGES FOR FRIENDS.

In this performative installation artist Susanne Khalil Yusef invites people to share time, space and conversation. Although the work adds elements of domesticity, it creates a space that negotiates the private and public by drawing attention to itself while also facilitating intimacy. The separate elements that together form a setting are painted over with the keffiyeh’s confusing and disorienting pattern, which, when upscaled, resembles a razzle dazzle camouflage. The geometric shapes in contrasting colours interrupt and intersect with each other in a staged presence dotted with chairs and tables. Artworks made with archival material such as photographs and small objects bring in connections to the artist’s own diasporic history. The questions she grapples with are made public and become elements that can start spontaneous conversations.

As part of the public programme, Khalil Yusef activates conversation through sonic intervention, inviting in different diasporic voices that are added to her own through spoken word performances, live music and conversation.

Susanne Khalil Yusef (1984, Germany, Palestine) makes immersive, colourful installations that combine dazzling murals, canvas paintings, tufted flying rugs, knitted canvases, ceramic sculptures, videos, assemblages, light boxes, performances, bronze sculptures, cars, public participation, police dogs and self-created archives. Her installations often offer space for persons from different disciplines, such as spoken-word artists, writers and an Arabic Ensemble. In her work she raises critical questions about themes such as homeland and displacement, identity and socio-geographic power relations. The stories within are closely related to her own biography: armed conflicts in her home country Palestine, migratory flows, autonomy, Orientalism, exile and colonial situations. Her work has been included in the collections of Museum Arnhem and the Textile Museum in Tilburg, the Netherlands. In addition to her practice as an artist, Khalil Yusef has also organized a group exhibition about colonialism with international artists.
