Zoals vanouds vieren we de kortste dag van het jaar, 21 december, met een speciaal samengesteld filmprogramma met de beste korte films van eigen bodem! Dit programma is Nederlands gesproken en wordt vertoond met Engelse ondertiteling.

De korte film is spannend, veelzijdig en heeft voor iedereen iets te bieden. Ook is het dé plek waar nieuw filmtalent zich aandient. Toch krijgt de korte film vaak weinig tijd op het witte doek. Om meer aandacht te geven aan korte films vieren we jaarlijks op 21 december de Dag van de Korte Film. In een uitgelezen compilatieprogramma zie je de beste korte films van eigen bodem, met onder meer de Gouden Kalf-winnaar Lucid Dreaming.

[ENG] The world of short films is exciting, versatile and has something for everyone. It is also the place where new film talent emerges. Yet short films often get little time on the big screen. To give more attention to short films, we celebrate Short Film Day on 21 December. In an exquisite compilation program, you will see the best short films from the Netherlands, including the ‘Golden Calf’ winner Lucid Dreaming. All films are shown with English subtitles.

PROGRAMMA

When Doves Try (Thalia de Jong, NL 2022, documentaire, 3’) Mannetjesduif Doffer maakt duivin Duifje het hof in deze akelig herkenbare dans van aantrekking, verleiding en… ontgoocheling. Dit zijn trouwens allesbehalve grijze duiven. Opvallend is de hippe vormgeving met realistisch gefilmde vogels tegen een strak gekleurde achtergrond en romantische muziek. Het maakt dat alle aandacht op die sierlijke versierpoging is gericht.

[ENG] Pigeon Doffer seduces hen Duifje in this eerily recognizable dance of attraction, seduction and… disillusionment. The trendy design with realistically filmed birds against a brightly colored background and romantic music is striking. It means that all attention is focused on that graceful attempt at seduction.

Balcony Cacophony (Quentin Haberham, NL 2022, animatie, 7’) Wanneer een rijke dame haar herenhuis moet verruilen voor een klein appartementje met balkon, kan ze moeilijk wennen aan haar nieuwe buurman en zijn vreemde hobby’s. Zijn luide muziek is de katalysator voor een escalerende burenruzie, die in deze springerige animatiefilm steeds absurdere vormen aanneemt. Van simpele geluidsoverlast tot wierookterreur en rondvliegende gin-tonicglazen. Leggen de twee hun geschil bij, of loopt het genadeloos uit de hand?

[ENG] When a rich lady has to exchange her country house for a small apartment with a balcony, she has difficulty getting used to her new neighbor and his strange hobbies. His loud music is the catalyst for an escalating neighborly dispute, which takes on increasingly absurd forms in this animated film. From simple noise pollution to incense terror and flying gin and tonic glasses. Will the two settle their differences, or will things spiral out of control?

Het optreden (Claire Zhou, NL 2023, fictie, 20’) Lin (41) bereidt zich voor op haar solonummer voor de Chinese Nieuwjaarsviering bij haar kerk. Ze wil indruk maken op de gemeenschap, maar haar mentor vindt dat haar uitvoering nog niet echt ‘raakt’. Hij adviseert Lin om zich werkelijk open te stellen, maar dat is moeilijk. Als er dan roddels rondgaan over haar zoon die al een tijd niet naar de kerk komt, staat Lin voor een lastige keuze. Blijft ze zich verstoppen of laat ze haar ware zelf zien?

[ENG] The forty-one-year-old Lin prepares to sing her solo song for her church’s Chinese New Year celebration. She wants to impress the community, but her mentor does not think her performance is very ‘moving’ yet. He advises Lin to really open up, but that is difficult. When gossip starts circulating about her son who has not been to church in a while, Lin is faced with a difficult choice. Will she continue to hide or will she reveal her true self?

Gleuf (Isis Mihrimah Cabolet, NL 2022, fictie, 17’) In dit onderzoek naar eenzaamheid laat regisseur Isis Cabolet een zeventigjarige vrouw in contact komen met een jongeman, wiens leven evenmin een sociale vetpot is. Hoewel ze uitersten lijken, wakkeren ze bij elkaar weer nieuwe levenslust aan.

[ENG] In this investigation into loneliness, director Isis Cabolet brings a seventy-year-old woman into contact with a young man, whose life is not very social either. Although they seem like extremes, together they provide a new zest for life.

Lucid Dreaming (Emma Evelein, 2023, dans, 15’) Tijdens een treinreis raakt een meisje geïntrigeerd door de onbekende reiziger die tegenover haar zit. Steeds dieper verliest ze zich in diens belevingswereld. Zowel de trein zelf, als haar medepassagiers worden in deze korte dansfilm steeds intensiever onderdeel van deze ervaring. Tijdens de rit, waarbij het inlevingsvermogen gelijktijdig krachtig en kwetsbaar wordt, komen de twee passagiers nader tot elkaar – zonder een woord te spreken.

[ENG] During a train journey, a girl becomes intrigued by the unknown traveler sitting opposite her. She loses herself deeper and deeper in his world of experience. Both the train itself and its fellow passengers become an increasingly intensive part of this short dance film. During the ride, in which empathy becomes powerful and vulnerable, the two passengers become closer – without saying a word.

Ik ben geen robot (Victoria Warmerdam, 2023, fictie 22’) “Vinden mensen u koel in de omgang?” Wanneer de jonge muziekproducent Lara haar computer niet kan overtuigen dat ze geen robot is, krijgt ze zelf ook twijfels. Want hoe vaak ze ook de verkeersborden en bomen uit de testjes identificeert, de computer accepteert haar vinkje niet. In paniek belt ze haar vriendje voor geruststelling, maar dan wordt de situatie nog ingewikkelder in deze absurde komedie met veel zwarte humor rond Lara’s existentiële dilemma.

[ENG] When young music producer Lara can not convince her computer that she is not a robot, she starts to have doubts herself. Because no matter how many times she identifies the traffic signs and trees from the tests, the computer does not accept her check mark. In a panic, she calls her boyfriend for reassurance, but then the situation becomes even more complicated in this absurd comedy with a lot of black humor about Lara’s existential dilemma.
