In het kader van de tentoonstelling Bakudengar in Museum Arnhem (10 maart tot en met 20 september 2026) vindt een voorvertoning plaats van History – Memory – Commemoration / SULAWESI (2026) van kunstenaar Iswanto Hartono, onderzoeker Mirwan Andan en kunstenaar Hans van Houwelingen, die binnenkort in première gaat bij De Balie in Amsterdam. In de pauze zijn er Indonesische hapjes en daarna wordt de korte film IKN vertoond, met aansluitend een zaalgesprek met de filmmakers.

Let op: de films hebben Engelse ondertiteling en het gesprek wordt in het Engels gevoerd.

History – Memory – Commemoration is een langlopend samenwerkingsproject van kunstenaar Iswanto Hartono en onderzoeker Mirwan Andan, beide van het Indonesische collectief Ruangrupa, en de Nederlandse kunstenaar Hans van Houwelingen. Samen produceren zij acht films, elk opgenomen op specifieke locaties in Indonesië en Nederland, die betrekking hebben op een gedeelde koloniale geschiedenis: Java, Atjeh, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Nederland, Nias, Molukken en Papoea. De filmserie geeft een beeld van hoe geschiedenis wordt herinnerd, beleefd en doorgegeven aan volgende generaties en toont de grote verscheidenheid aan betekenissen en dynamieken in de Indonesisch-Nederlandse verhouding.

Deze film, opgenomen in Sulawesi, toont hoe de impact van het geweld van kapitein Raymond Westerling en zijn Speciale Troepen tijdens de onafhankelijkheidsoorlog van 1946/47 nog altijd doorwerkt in het heden. Maar ook hoe eeuwenoude lokale culturen ondanks krachtige externe invloeden de tijd doorstaan en hun authenticiteit behouden.

IKN (2026) is speciaal gemaakt voor Bakudengar als prelude op het volgende, nog in productie zijnde filmdeel History – Memory – Commemoration / KALIMANTAN (2026). Deze korte film gaat over Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), de in aanbouw zijnde nieuwe hoofdstad van Indonesië op Oost-Kalimantan. Myrna A. Safitri, waarnemend hoofd voor milieu en natuurlijke hulpbronnen van de Nusantara Capital Authority, ontvouwt haar plannen voor deze stad die uit het niets binnen enkele jaren miljoenen inwoners, inclusief de Indonesische presidentiële elite, moet huisvesten. De film toont hoe deze controversiële toekomst zich verhoudt tot het culturele erfgoed en koloniale erfenissen die de hedendaagse realiteit van de oorspronkelijke bevolking van dit grondgebied bepalen.

Na de filmvertoningen is er een nabespreking met de filmmakers en een gast.

[ENGLISH] History – Memory – Commemoration is a long-term collaborative project by artist Iswanto Hartono and researcher Mirwan Andan, both members of the Indonesian collective Ruangrupa, with Dutch artist Hans van Houwelingen. Together they are producing eight films, each shot at specific locations in Indonesia and the Netherlands that relate to a shared colonial history: Java, Aceh, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, the Netherlands, Nias, the Moluccas, and Papua. The film series offers insight into how history is remembered, experienced, and passed on to future generations, while highlighting the complex meanings and evolving dynamics within the Indonesian–Dutch relationship.

As part of the exhibition Bakudengar at Museum Arnhem (March 10 to September 20, 2026), a preview will be presented of the third installment, History – Memory – Commemoration / SULAWESI (2026), which will soon premiere at De Balie in Amsterdam. Filmed in Sulawesi, this work reveals how the impact of the violence carried out by Captain Raymond Westerling and his Special Forces during the War of Independence (1946–47) continues to resonate in the present day. At the same time, it illustrates how centuries-old local cultures continue to endure, preserving their authenticity despite powerful external influences.

IKN (2026) has been created especially for Bakudengar as a prelude to the next film, currently in production, History – Memory – Commemoration / KALIMANTAN (2026). This short film focuses on Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), the new capital of Indonesia currently under construction in East Kalimantan. Myrna A. Safitri, deputy for environment and natural resources of the Nusantara Capital Authority, outlines her plans for a city that, within just a few years, is expected to house millions of inhabitants, including Indonesia’s presidential elite. The film explores how this controversial vision of the future relates to the cultural heritage and colonial legacies that shape the present-day reality of the territory’s Indigenous population.

The screenings will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and a guest. The films are subtitled in English, and the discussion will be conducted in English.
