Expat Cinema: Un beau matin
Un beau matin is a personal and loving French drama from Mia Hansen-Løve (Bergman Island). Set in her native Paris and starring Léa Seydoux (Crimes of the Future, No Time to Die), her new film is about the irony of life. Hansen-Løve drew inspiration for the script in part from her father’s illness, so the story contains autobiographical elements.
Single mother Sandra (Léa Seydoux) lives with her eight-year-old daughter in a small apartment in Paris. Besides taking care of her daughter and her busy job as an interpreter, Sandra regularly visits her father, a longtime philosophy professor who suffers from a neurodegenerative disease that causes him to deteriorate rapidly and prevents him from living independently. While Sandra and her family are busy packing up his belongings and the arduous search for a suitable nursing home, she runs into her old friend Clément with whom she had lost touch. Despite Clément’s relationship, the two have an affair and Sandra feels alive again after a long time.
