Widely acclaimed Haruki Murakami-adaptation about the special friendship between a theatre director mourning the loss of his wife, and his taciturn female chauffeur. Winner of the Oscar for Best International Film.
A rising director in the firmament of contemporary Japanese cinema, Ryusuke Hamaguchi delivers a road movie sui generis that travels paths of loneliness, loss, and bereavement.
Theatre director Yûsuke Kafuku is happily married to Oto until fate suddenly strikes. Devastated by grief Kafuku tries to understand the secret that he discovered just before Oto’s death. Two years after, the still mourning Kafuku accepts an offer to direct a play in Hiroshima. His new employer arranges for him a perfectly driving, but very modest young driver Misaki to drive him wherever he liks, during his stay. While the two spend a lot of time together and they get to know each other better and better, Kafuku confronts the mystery around his wife that still is on his mind.
