Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old lives with her single mom. Their world collapses the day she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm.
Her mom thinks that the dirty needle used for the tattoo may have infected her daughter with a mysterious new disease. Ducournau situates the film in the ’80s and ’90s, in a world plagued by a fictional epidemic reminiscent of the aids crisis.
The director, herself a child when HIV first appeared, recalls “a contagious fear, a sense of shame among a whole section of the population, and the way society refused to deal with the problem head-on and admit that we were all affected.” And in an interview with Vanity Fair, she added: “It is a commentary on the way this fear spread, and the impact it has had on my generation.”
