Silent Running
As early as the 1970s, environmental awareness was a common topic of conversation. Silent Running is one of the first Hollywood productions to tap into that trend. This sci-fi cult classic had a major influence on later scientific experiments and depicts a future in which all plant life on Earth has disappeared.
Only a few spaceships still harbor any form of plant life. When orders are given to destroy the last remaining gardens to cut costs, ecologist Freeman Lowell cannot bring himself to do it. Together with his robots Huey, Dewey, and Louie, he hijacks one of the spaceships and flees to keep the last precious patch of greenery alive.

This film is part of the science fiction film series (2)026: A Space Odyssey, produced in collaboration with CASA, in which architecture and spatial design play a prominent role. The introductory speaker is Wieger Wamelink, an ecologist and space biologist at Wageningen University & Research (WUR).
