Winners Gouden Hert 2024

The Go Short Arnhem Short Film Festival (October 4-6) is all about regional film talent. To encourage (up-and-coming) filmmakers, Go Short organizes the Gelderland Short Competition every year. The nominated films in this competition were shown on the big screen during the three-day festival. The winners were presented today, on the last day of the festival. The competition’s professional jury consisted of Nazmiye Oral (actress and writer), Guido Coppis (filmmaker), and Bea de Visser (filmmaker and artist).

Jop Kraaijkamp – Schaap Lekker (Gouden Hert for best fiction)

In this film, a little sheep, working as a quality inspector in a fabric factory, struggles with the pressure of his job. At night, his stress turns into a bizarre musical nightmare in which a giant cauliflower sings about pollution and destruction. This unique animation combines humor with underlying themes of work pressure and responsibility.

“Short films are special because they are the perfect genre for experimenting. The name says it all; it has to be SHORT, and as a creator, you need to be very clear about what you want to convey at its core, both visually and through sound. And if you succeed, you take something in and understand why this had to be a short. We chose a film that understands all of this well, but also dares to take risks and exudes pure joy in making. We admire how the creator confidently mixed different techniques. It’s clear that this creator has a strong voice in development and and we really want to encourage that,” said the jury.

Sebastian Mulder, And a Happy New Year (Gouden Hert for best non-fiction)

Without commentary, but still loud and clear, this short documentary shows how animals experience fireworks on New Year’s Eve. We follow the growing stress of animals and their owners, from the perspective of dogs with GoPros.

The jury: “A special film that initially misleads you as a viewer in a positive way and immediately plays with perspective. This choice of perspective lets us experience what it’s like to be in the paws of humanity’s oldest companion. We also found the film structurally very strong. The actors in this film aren’t necessarily the easiest players, but the filmmaker still chose their most optimal moments. Finally, we really love the message; it’s an enriching experience. The winner in non-fiction is And a Happy New Year by Sebastiaan Mulder.”

Special Mentions Let’s Play and Glitch Glitch

Just missed out on the prizes but absolutely worth mentioning, the jury highlighted Let’s Play by Marzieh Rasekh and Glitch Glitch by Merel van Slobbe.

“They are films that are bold and daring, and well made in their own unique way. We want to encourage these filmmakers to keep going. We also want to encourage all other filmmakers not to shy away from boldness and rawness, because that’s how you can find your own voice, even if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.”

Sebastian Mulder, And a Happy New Year (Gouden Hert voor beste non-fictie)

Zonder commentaar, maar toch luid en duidelijk, laat deze korte documentaire zien hoe dieren vuurwerk op oudejaarsavond ervaren. We volgen de toenemende stress van dieren en hun baasjes, vanuit het perspectief van honden met GoPro’s.

Net niet in de prijzen maar absoluut het benoemen waard vond de jury Let’s Play van Marzieh Rasekh en Glitch Glitch van Merel van Slobbe.
