The Incomer
On a remote Scottish island, a brother and sister survive by catching seabirds. They tell each other stories about their ancestors and defend the island against the dreaded “outsiders.” But when a somewhat clumsy local government official comes to take them away from their birthplace, their world is turned upside down.
As their isolated existence slowly begins to unravel, Isla is haunted by visions of a Finman: a mythical creature that lures her further and further out to sea.
In this feature film debut, which he wrote himself, Scottish director Louis Paxton blends comedy with Scottish mythology and a touch of Yorgos Lanthimos. A film about outsiders and intruders, about the need to belong and the fear of those who come from outside. An intriguing, unsettling film that slowly creeps under your skin. Paxton’s film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the NEXT Innovator Award. It features fine performances by Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), Gayle Rankin (House of the Dragon), and Grant O’Rourke (Outlander).
