Mother
Calcutta, India, August 1948. Teresa, Mother Superior of the convent of the Sisters of Loreto, anxiously awaits a letter from the Vatican that will finally grant her permission to leave her convent and found a new order. A calling she has received from God. But then she is faced with a dilemma that puts her ambitions and faith to the test.
Teona Strugar Mitevska explores who Mother Teresa was before she became world-famous: the woman behind the myth. We see a determined yet insecure young woman who shakes up the rigid convent community. Ultimately, the film tells a universal story in which introspection and personal growth clash with a closed-off world—one from which the young Teresa must break free. It features powerful imagery, a raw soundtrack, and magical-realist touches.
Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049, Tirza) star in this film, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
