In a gigantic underground factory city around the year 2000, workers rise up against the ruling intellectual class, and the magnificent city above threatens to be destroyed. However, Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), the son of the great ruler of Metropolis, manages to avert a catastrophe with the help of the prophetess Maria (Brigitte Helm).
