Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (re-release)

Jacques Demy | France 1967 | 127 minutes | language: French | subtitles: Dutch

Twin sisters Delphine and Solange dream of a life full of love, art, and adventure beyond the boring town of Rochefort by the sea. When a traveling carnival comes to town, opportunities suddenly seem to appear.

Without realizing it, the characters constantly pass by each other, while the ideal lover sometimes literally turns out to be just around the corner. After the worldwide success of Les parapluies de Cherbourg, Jacques Demy made his most extravagant musical.

With Catherine Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac, Danielle Darrieux, and Hollywood legend Gene Kelly, he creates a loving tribute to the classic MGM musicals, completely in his own colorful style. Michel Legrand’s swinging music, the choreography, and the playful use of chance make Les demoiselles de Rochefort one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music.
