When Déni Pitsaev inherits an unexplored piece of land in Georgia in the beautiful documentary Imago, his mother’s dream is crystal clear: this is where he must build his permanent home. Déni, who grew up in France and still lives in Paris, has doubts about this possible future. Could this become his home? Winner of both the prestigious Best Documentary Award and the Jury Prize (Semaine de la Critique) at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Déni travels to Georgia to see the place with his own eyes. Many Chechens live in this region, including relatives of his mother, who, like her, once fled the war. The close-knit community, which immediately welcomes him with open arms, shows him what his home might look like in that place. At the same time, the question everyone wants to ask him lingers: when is Déni finally going to get married?
Through stunning imagery and a subtle narrative style, we follow his quest to discover his roots, his family, and himself—a journey in which the silences in conversations sometimes reveal more than the words spoken. Pitsaev weaves together universal themes—such as restrictive gender roles, the indelible scars of war, and the endless search for where you truly belong—in an impressive and intelligent way. A deeply moving and personal masterpiece.
