Pawel Pawlikowski | France, Italy, Poland, Germany 2026 | 82 minutes | language: German | subtitles: English
Oscar winner Paweł Pawlikowski (Cold War, Ida) is back with Fatherland. Once again, Pawlikowski depicts postwar Europe where identity and family clash in a dazzling yet understated manner.
In the summer of 1949, at the height of the Cold War, writer and Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller) set out on an emotional road trip through a devastated and fragmented Germany. In a black Buick, they drive from Frankfurt—under U.S. control—to Weimar, which is under Soviet occupation. After sixteen years in exile in the United States, Thomas Mann is confronted not only with a divided homeland but also with a tragedy within his own family.
