Antonia
“Antonia,” written and directed by Marleen Gorris, is a feminist film that follows the lives of several generations of women in a small Dutch village.
This feminist family chronicle relies on its bravura, whimsical humor, and fairy-tale charm—not necessarily on its subtlety. Willeke van Ammelrooy gives the performance of her life as Antonia, the steadfast farmer of a beautiful Limburg farmstead. She is the bedrock for the five generations of women who inhabit the farm and instills in them the importance of remaining independent.
Antonia has been showered with awards: 2 Golden Calves (Dutch National Film Price), the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and—of course—an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film! This made it the first Dutch film to actually win this award.
