Sense and Sensibility
A compelling new film adaptation of Jane Austen’s famous novel Sense and Sensibility: a delightful, witty, and deeply relatable story about love and the bond between two sisters, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing, Normal People) and Esmé Creed-Miles (The Sandman, Hanna).
Following the sudden death of their father, the sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood lose not only their home but also their social standing. In a world where financial independence for women is virtually nonexistent and love is inextricably linked to money and class, they must navigate the balance between reason and emotion, romantic longing and logic.
The work of the brilliant Jane Austen continues to hold an enormous appeal for filmmakers. Although Austen lived in a completely different era, she succeeded in uncovering such fundamental truths about human nature that her fiction remains relevant to this day. And, of course, Austen is incredibly witty.
The director is Georgia Oakley. She made her feature film debut in 2022 with the highly acclaimed Blue Jean, a film about a lesbian gym teacher who anxiously hides her sexual orientation from her colleagues. Oakley promises us a fresh interpretation of Austen’s work, with the relationship between Elinor and Marianne at the emotional heart of the film.
