Hysteria is een spannende, gelaagde thriller die thema’s als vooroordelen, identiteit en de representatie van ‘de Ander’ in de westerse media onderzoekt. De film ging vorig jaar in première op het Internationale Filmfestival van Berlijn en is in mei in een aantal Nederlandse theaters te zien. Zo ook in Focus!

Wanneer een verbrande Koran wordt gevonden op een filmset, nemen de opnames een duistere wending. De 24-jarige stagiaire Elif, gevangen in een kruisvuur van beschuldigingen, raakt verstrikt in een gevaarlijk spel van geheimen en leugens en bevindt zich in het hart van een allesomvattende samenzwering.

Hysteria combineert spanning met scherpe maatschappijkritiek, daagt dominante narratieven uit en houdt het publiek op het puntje van hun stoel. Deze film daagt gangbare opvattingen uit en brengt belangrijke, vaak over het hoofd geziene perspectieven op “migrantenverhalen” naar voren.

Over de schrijver en regisseur

Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay is een frisse, nieuwe stem in de hedendaagse Duitse cinema. Hysteria is zijn tweede speelfilm. Zijn debuutfilm, Oray, won in 2019 de prestigieuze prijs voor Beste Debuutfilm op het Internationale Filmfestival van Berlijn. Naast zijn werk als regisseur is Büyükatalay een begenadigd schrijver en producent. Hij schreef mee aan en produceerde de documentaire Love, Deutschmarks & Death (2022) van Cem Kaya. Recentelijk was hij coproducent van de Belgische documentaire 2m² van Volkan Üce, die in februari 2026 in première ging op het Internationale Filmfestival Rotterdam.

Premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival of last year, Hysteria is a tense, layered thriller that explores themes of prejudice, identity, and the representation of ‘the Other’ in western media. 

When a burned Quran is found on a film set, the shoot takes a dark turn and the crew is thrown into turmoil. Caught in the crossfire of accusations, 24-year-old intern Elif is drawn into a dangerous game of secrets and lies, finding herself at the heart of an all-absorbing conspiracy.

Hysteria combines suspense with sharp social commentary, challenging dominant narratives while keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. This film challenges dominant narratives and brings forward important, often overlooked perspectives on “migrant stories.” It deserves to be seen on the big screen.

About the writer & director

Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay is a fresh, new voice in contemporary German cinema. Hysteria marks his second feature. His debut, Oray, received the prestigious Best First Feature Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2019. In addition to his work as a director, Büyükatalay is an accomplished writer and producer. He co-wrote and produced Cem Kaya’s documentary Love, Deutschmarks & Death (2022). Most recently, he co-produced the Belgian documentary 2m² by Volkan Üce, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in February of 2026.
